Fun Favor Foods - Part I

Delightful Donuts and More!

Cinnamon Sugar, Powdered Sugar, Vermont Maple Sugar, Chocolate, Oreo Cookie Crumbs, Vanilla, and Raspberry. There I stood staring at the sign, trying to figure out which flavored sugar topping I wanted for the mini donuts I had long been craving. Yum! Yum! Which one should I select?

Okay, let's back up a bit to find out exactly what lead me to this insatiable craving. While working at Ponte Winery, I was invited to a party at Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa in Rancho Santa Fe which was hosted by Ceremony Magazine. I know, I have such a difficult job. Yeah right! It was at this event that I discovered a very guilty pleasure, the mini donut cart!

That's right; there are actually companies that specialize in bringing fried food options to your wedding reception or event. On this particular evening, Party Donuts, a San Diego based company was frying up donuts right in front of us. These tiny pillows of heaven were being topped off with your choice of cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, or Ghirardelli chocolate. They even placed them in cute little customizable bags. Not only was the process fun to watch, but they were a hit with everyone at the party. They tasted every bit as good as they looked. I couldn't get them out of my mind! Believe me, if I had known about them when I planned my own wedding, I would have put a separate line item in the budget for mini donut cart. Knowing my husband's immense sweet tooth, I somehow think he would have been okay with a mini donut cart.

Now being that I live in Orange County, just imagine how overjoyed I was to learn The Fry Girl Inc. would be providing dessert at our industry mixer for the Association of Bridal Consultants. So what is The Fry Girl Inc. you ask? Well, if you haven't heard of The Fry Girl Inc., it's quite possible you might be trapped under a large boulder because they are "all the buzz" in Los Angeles! The company which is owned by Shelley Beals, has an amazing clientele which consists of celebrities like Adam Sandler, Shaquille O'Neal, and Oprah Winfrey. You really should check out her website to see all the different cast and crew she has catered to in Los Angeles. It's quite impressive!

So, back to my guilty pleasure. On this particular evening, we were treated to a wonderful dinner at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach. Knowing what would be coming later in the evening; I managed to save a little extra room for dessert! Upon conclusion of dinner, I made my way up to the terrace area of the hotel with colleagues and friends, Jessica and Robert Tran of Jessica Elizabeth Photography. Check out the cool photo they took which show the mini donuts being fried up onsite right in front of our eyes. Don't they look good?

Diet? What diet? We're not on diets! Actually, if you are religious about counting your calories, you need not worry too much. Check out the below photo which shows a few interesting facts about each mini donut. Thank you again to Jessica and Robert of Jessica Elizabeth Photography for capturing all of these cool shots for the blog. You guys are the best!

I've taken the liberty of recapping some of the important facts for you. Each mini donut, without the sugar topping, contains only:

  • 1 gram of fat
  • 26 calories
  • 3.5 grams of carbs

Not bad, right? Are you wondering which topping I selected? Well, the truth is they all sounded so good that I enlisted the help of the owner, Shelley Beals. Since the Vermont Maple Sugar topping was a personal favorite of hers, that's the one I selected. Jessica selected the Raspberry topping. We felt both flavors more than lived up to our expectations!

So, are you sold on having a mini donut cart at your wedding? If your fiancé says "no," then I vote that you surprise him with it at the reception. Trust me, once he sees the cart in action at your reception, he will be happy that you did it!. Plus, after a long night of dancing, you know these babies would be a sure hit with all your guests!

If you really are not a donut lover, then you might want to consider some of the other fun options The Fry Girl Inc. offers. How about deep fried candy bars? Imagine your favorite candy bar dipped in donut batter and fried to a golden brown. Snickers, Milky Way and Almond Joy are just a few options. How about Oreo cookies? Yes, that too!

Don't have a sweet tooth? No worries! The Fry Girl Inc. bakes up gourmet French fries which are produced in a special oven so thy have less fat than most fries. Some of the choices for mouth watering sauces they use to top off your fries include black and white truffle, rosemary mayonnaise, and chipotle mayonnaise.

As you can see from the heading of this blog, this is only Part I of Fun Favor Foods. Keep checking in with my blog as I will continue to share some more interesting and fun food elements to incorporate for your wedding.

Kerrie, thanks for the blog spotlight! I really appreciate it! We also fry up chicken and veggie corn dogs. These are great for late night snacks as well! Looking forward to working with you again soon! Shelley, The Fry Girl Inc.
